Allison was the first up that morning; not that she had slept much. She and Paul had had a spirited session of lovemaking-the videos were making Paul more horny than usual. Moments after she felt herself giving into a sex-induced drowsiness, a frightful thump on the wall near their bed was followed by screams. Vincent and his date, the very dark-skinned nurse, were going at it. The moans and loud groans continued until the sun rose.

Although Paul slept like a baby, Allison couldn’t. The noise from the next bedroom, Vincent’s room, was outrageous. It had to have been the dark-skinned woman’s head hitting the wall. Not Vinny being rough! Then she decided to make some flavored hot tea.

A glance toward the front door aided her in finding the note, and her heart melted. No, she didn’t open it, and it only said To Vince on the envelope, but she knew what it must say and whom it was from. She put it in her robe, fixed a cup of tea, and waited for Vincent to wake. Even if his date was with him, she was going to hand it to him as soon as she saw him.

She did, and it wiped the evening of bliss from Mayone’s thoughts. Vinny saw the name; no one else called him Vince, and put it in the breast pocket of his leather jacket.

“Why don’t you open it?’’ Mayone said.

“Later. It’s personal.’’

“What’s going on, Vincent. I am not a fool. I am not a groupie. I told you that. I saw how Frences was last night. I don’t want any shit from her. I care about you, but I’m not taking any shit.’’

Vinny glanced over at the entrance of the kitchen, and Allison slid out of view.

“What do you want me to say?’’

“The truth. Try that.’’

“There’s nothing between Frences and me. Nothing,’’ He said loud enough for all to hear. “Not a thing.’’

Vincent drove Mayone home in Paul’s car so she could change for work. She was quiet, spending most of the ride with her arms folded. She wanted to make love to him again. She wanted to do him well before he read whatever desperate plea Frences sent. She couldn’t compete with a light-skinned doctor, who lived two flights below. When Vinny parked, Mayone pinned him against his seat and kissed him hard and deep. She licked his neck, sucked his lips and nibbled his ear. Her warm breath just about got a rise.

She panted, “Come up stairs. I need some more.’’

“Don’t you have to go to work?’’

“I can be late. I’m the charge nurse, remember.’’

He couldn’t look into her sultry, burnt almond eyes. “Naw,’’ he rubbed his own thighs. “I got things to do before the game.’’

She kissed his neck and wrapped her arms around it. The feel of her soft skin was a turn on until he felt the tears.

She whispered, “This past month has been more than I can ask for. I love you, Vincent. Please don’t hurt me.”

Vinny sat in the idle car outside of Mayone’s place.
